The
island of Procida is
an island of volcanic origin that rises between Naples and the island of
Ischia. The surface of Procida is of only 3,9 km but it offers to his
visitors the most beautiful natural places of the world. It seems
impossible that with only one hour from Naples (taking a ferry-boat) you
can arrive in a place so Mediterranean and so sunny. The visitor of
Procida always remains without words when he looks at the particular
architecture of the houses of Procida, the beautiful fishing-net of the
fisherman on the quays, the seagulls in the air…The little roads, made
with stones, the inlets into the rock, the only remembrance of the ancient
sleeping volcanoes, the agaves that falls sheer to the sea. The beaches of
finest sands , the restaurants near to the sea, the beautiful smell of the
lemons and the enchanting vineyards , all in Procida talk about sea , sun,
and holidays. In Procida the streets are few and little because the
typical architecture that you can see in Procida is the result of Arabian,
Spanish and Greek influences. For many different artists Procida is also
the ideal scenario for their films. One of the most characteristic places
is certainly the Corricella , a little port of fishermen with multicolour
houses built into the rock and also the Chiaiolella , a little tourist
port nearest Ciraccio’s beach. The highest part of the island is the
medieval village of Terra Murata. This medieval village was until XVI
century the only inhabited place of the island. From Terra Murata you can
see all the island of Procida and you can also visit the wonderful Abbey
of St. Michael founded by Benedictines
in VII century. In this Abbey you can find
a picture of Luca Giordano and other famous pictures. In its crypts
you can find a big library of ancient texts, catacombs and secret passages.
Attached to Procida by a little bridge there is Vivara an oasis where
recent archaeological excavations have brought to light objects of great
archaeological interest of Neolithic period and Mycenaean age.
